Rye (Secale)

Rye Genus Details

This grass is a cool-season grain or cereal crop that is not to be confused with ryegrass, a common allergenic lawn grass. This grain, which is grown worldwide, is not a major crop in North America. This genus has 5 species, which consist of both annuals and perennials. The plants grow up to 5' tall and has simple stems and bluish-green, flat leaves that reach 1/2' wide. Flowering occurs from May to June. The abundant pollen is heavy which restricts its wind dispersal range. The grain is used to make bread and rye whiskey.
